“Voices from Darfur” // 10.17.2007
Survivors of the genocide in Sudan’s western region of Darfur shared their
stories to the Auraria campus as part of the Save Darfur Coalition’s Voices
from Darfur campaign—a national speaking tour featuring Darfuri refugees—sponsored
by the UCD Office of Student Life and Metro State Office of Student Activities.
Launched in the summer of 2007, “Voices from Darfur” highlights speakers such as Hari, who fled his village in 2003 after months of bombings by his own government. Hari risked his life as a translator for The New York Times, BBC, and National Geographic, among others and was arrested in Sudan on false espionage charges while translating for Chicago Tribune reporter Paul Salopek in Darfur in 2006. After 35 days in jail, New Mexico governor Bill Richardson negotiated Hari and Salopek’s release. Soon thereafter, the United States government granted Hari refugee status.
Since February 2003, as many as 400,000 people are estimated to have died in Darfur and 2.5 million have been displaced as a result of what President Bush and Congress have called genocide. Suffering in Darfur continues to intensify as a result of the genocide, which is sponsored by the Sudanese government and perpetrated by the Janjaweed militias. In June 2007, a U.N. spokesperson stated that nearly 140,000 civilians have been displaced since the beginning of the year. Four million people are now affected by the crisis, which has spread from Sudan into neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic.
Why Islam Has Trouble with Modernism? //
10.25.2007
Author of West of Kabul, East of New York, Tamim Ansary, talked about his
exploration and findings of Islamism. His interest in Islam began in 1980
when he traveled through North Africa and Turkey. After his discovery of
Islamism, it took Ansary 14 years working as a textbook editor for Harcourt
Brace Jovanovich to recover from the shock.
Beginning with a look at the historical unfolding of Islam in its first millennium, Ansary moves on to explore the reformist currents of the last two centuries and the challenge Islamic thinkers face in trying to formulate a theology relevant to industrial modernism. A discussion of intellectual currents in the Islamic world is analyzed in the context of the Muslim experience with imperialism and its own growing political impotence.
